Resilient Homestead and Livelihood Support to the Vulnerable Coastal People of Bangladesh
The GCF-RHL project, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and implemented by PKSF, aims to support vulnerable coastal communities in Bangladesh to adapt to the adverse effects of climate change. Throughout a period of 03 years from 2025 to 2028, the project will directly benefit 3,500 households in Chakaria Upazila of Cox’s Bazar District, across ten unions including Kakhara, Surajpur-Manikpur, Kaiarbil, Lakhyarchar, Bheola Manikchar, Bamo Bilchari, Chiringa, Dulahazara, Fashiakhali, and Harbang.
Goal:
To develop climate-adaptive coastal communities in Bangladesh through the adoption of climate-resilient housing and livelihood technologies and enhance the capacity of communities and organizations on addressing climate change impacts in their localities.
Specific Objectives
- Develop climate-resilient homesteads for marginal and vulnerable populations.
- Promote climate-adaptive livelihoods tailored to saline-prone environments.
- Enhance the knowledge and awareness of coastal communities regarding climate change and its impacts.
Beneficiary Criteria:
- Those who live in saline-prone coastal vulnerable areas.
- Prior to women-headed households and other disadvantaged groups.
- Poor and Ultra-poor households.
- Daily income is less than USD 1.90
- Those who are not receiving any similar support from other projects and those have salinity affected lands.
Key Activities:
- Construction of 20 climate-resilient homesteads with elevated plinths, sanitation, rainwater harvesting, and solar panels.
- Plantation of 2,500 trees in homestead areas.
- Establishment of 100 slatted houses for goat/sheep rearing and provision of veterinary support.
- Financial and technical support for rearing goats/sheep and cultivating saline-tolerant vegetables.
- Creation of a community-based farmed crab supply chain through hatcheries, nurseries, and farming support.
Outcomes:
- Reduced Risk from Extreme Weather: Through resilient homestead construction and tree plantation, communities will be better protected from cyclones, flooding, and storm surges.
- Strengthened Livelihood Resilience: Diversified and climate-resilient income sources such as goat/sheep rearing and crab farming will enhance food security and economic stability.
- Enhanced Community Climate Planning: Local capacity for climate planning will improve through community group engagement, training, knowledge dissemination, and institutional development.
