IDF launched Solar Power Program in 2003 in partnership with IDCOL (a government company for infrastructure and solar power) to provide electricity to rural and remote areas which does not have access to the national grid. The program initially funded by IDCOL (Infrastructure Development Company Limited) through grants and loans, later supported by government TR-KABITA program.
The main purpose of this initiative is to improve energy access and living standards in off-grid areas by installing solar home systems, streetlights, biogas plants, and other solar infrastructure. IDF was recognized as the Most Promising Partner by IDCOL for its contributions in 2004.
Activities:
- Solar System Installation: Provided solar home systems, street lighting, AC and DC grids, biogas plants, solar pumps, and improved cookstoves across rural areas.
- Credit Facilities: Offered medium- and long-term credit to families in non-grid areas to facilitate the installation of solar systems.
- Maintenance Services: Ongoing maintenance of previously installed systems across 28 upazilas in 12 districts, ensuring continuous operation of solar installations.
- Collaboration with Local Governments: Worked with upazila-level bodies for beneficiary selection and implementation under the government’s TR-KABITA program.
Interventions:
- Energy Access Expansion: Brought solar electricity to thousands of rural homes, schools, and public areas, improving access to clean, reliable energy.
- Green Development: Supported green development by using renewable energy through reducing fossil fuel power sources.
- Community Infrastructure: Enhanced public infrastructure with solar streetlights, pumps, and biogas systems, improving community safety and resource access.
- Financial Inclusion: Provided credit options to rural families, allowing them to adopt solar technology with manageable financial support.
