Case study of Shirin Begum

Shirin Begum was born on 10th October 1984 in a poor farmer’s family in old Bil Chari village of Bandarban Lama upazila. Shirin Begum is the 3rd child of her parents in a big family of 2 brothers and 3 sisters. She was not able to continue her studies further due to scarcity. After passing 5th standard in 1995, she did not study further. At the age of 15, she was married to Abdul Karim, a poor farmer from a nearby village. When Shirin became the mother of her first child after a year of marriage, the in-laws separated Shirina and her husband Abdul Karim.

After the separation, Shirin and her husband were not able to think how they will run the family. Suddenly separated from their families, they felt like the sky has fallen on their heads. Day by day their economic condition was getting worse.

In this situation, one day Shirin heard about IDF from her neighbor Fatema Begum. When Shirin heard about the unsecured loans of IDF to change the economic status of landless and penniless people, she felt renewed hope to live. Shirin told her husband about IDF. In 2013, a new group with 04 more helpless women members managed loans of 15,000, 20,000, 30,000, 30,000 and 35,000 taka till 2018, again on 26 August 2020, IDF took a loan of 60,000 taka from Line Jhiri, 30/th center and with this, she bought a cow and made a papaya garden with a total of 90,000 taka, including the previous 30,000 taka. She was very happy to be able to grow papaya garden together with cows. The economic situation was changing by selling papaya from the garden within a year. In this, she pays all the installments of the 1st installment on time and offers the loan in the second installment. In the second round, he took a loan of 100,000 taka and bought two dairy cows with the income from the papaya plantation. After that, she gradually took a loan of 150,000 taka in the next phase. With this money, she owned 3 more bulls. Starting from scratch, Shirina now owns 2 cows 5 bulls, mortgaged land and orchard. Even during the global pandemic corona virus, economic problems have not been realized. At present she cultivates a farm and 2 acres of land on lease.

Born in a poor family of old Bill Chari, Shirin is now a successful entrepreneur through her hard work, perseverance and the help of IDF. With 3 children and a husband, Shirin now lives a comfortable life. Shirin is now grateful to IDF for its support.
