Maryam Begum's Success in Overcoming Financial Crisis during the Corona Period

Maryam Begum, a resident of Dabunia village in the Betbunia union of Kaukhali upazila, Rangamati, faced financial challenges during the Corona period. Her husband, a farmer, struggled to provide for their family of five, which included Maryam, her mother-in-law, two sons, and a daughter. Given the persistent scarcity in their household, Maryam sought alternative means to supplement their income. However, the lack of initial capital was a significant barrier. With some available space around their house, Maryam contemplated starting a domestic chicken rearing project. Despite her intentions, she was unable to commence the project due to insufficient funds. During this challenging time, Maryam learned about the development organization IDF through a neighbor. Accompanied by this neighbor, she visited the Betbunia Branch of IDF to learn more about the organization. On November 28, 2017, she became a member of IDF.

Maryam discussed her plans and financial constraints with the IDF’s agricultural officer, seeking guidance on how to benefit from domestic chicken farming. Recognizing her keen interest, the agricultural officer arranged for training to help her prepare for the challenges of indigenous chicken farming. Subsequently, Maryam started her domestic chicken farming project with a loan of BDT 20,000 from the IDF. Her dedication, patience, and the much-needed support from the IDF yielded positive results within a year, boosting her experience and confidence. Eager to expand her operations, she continued to seek advice from the IDF agricultural officer. Impressed by her success, hard work, and self-confidence, the agricultural officer recommended that she raise layer chickens. Following this advice, Maryam now has 95 chickens in her layer chicken farm, producing an average of 90 eggs per day. After accounting for expenses, she earns a monthly profit of BDT 10,000.

As her income increased, Maryam continued to increase her loans from the organization. Currently, she has an ongoing loan of BDT 1, 50,000. In addition to chickens, she is now also rearing cows, goats, ducks, and pigeons, leading to a prosperous family life. This financial stability allows her to easily fund her children’s education.

While many faced economic disasters during the Corona epidemic, Maryam’s hard work and dedication saved her from financial crisis. Reflecting on her journey, Maryam stated, “During the war with Corona, my life was not threatened by the pandemic but by poverty. With the help of the IDF, I overcame that poverty and managed the financial crisis brought by the epidemic. For this, I am grateful and indebted to IDF.”
