“Vegetable Cultivation in Tania's Homestead: A Blessing during the Corona Pandemic”
Guchchagram is a hilly village approximately 6 kilometers from the IDF Sarkarhat branch. Tania Akter, a resident of this village, is an active member of the IDF’s 80th center. Formerly a housewife, her husband is an expatriate. Tania’s family consists of one son and one daughter. Known for her active participation, Tania has a good reputation as a regular member of the IDF. She also has ample space in her homestead yard to cultivate vegetables throughout the year. Consequently, she was selected as a beneficiary of the ‘Vegetable Cultivation Project in Residential Yards.’
Along with other selected beneficiaries, Tania received necessary training in vegetable cultivation. The organization ensured the supply of various types of vegetable seeds for three seasons. They facilitated the construction of lofts and the planting of ginger, potato, papaya, and lemon seedlings in the shaded areas around the house. Throughout the year, agricultural workers provided Tania with essential advice and technical assistance.
Currently, Tania’s garden boasts vegetables such as radish, puishak, datashak, red cabbage, eggplants, beans, rice pumpkin, and bitter gourd, which are cultivated by the family. After meeting their own needs, she sells the surplus to local villagers. During the Corona period, Tania sold vegetables worth approximately BDT 1,500 to nearby villagers.
The role of Tania’s vegetable garden during the Corona period was significant. With her husband living abroad and no other family support, Tania found it difficult to regularly visit the distant market. However, the year-round vegetable cultivation facilitated by the IDF’s agricultural project provided an additional source of income and met her daily vegetable needs. The garden was a blessing during the nationwide lockdown and restricted communication due to the pandemic. Tania mentioned that the experience gained from applying the IDF’s training in vegetable cultivation would benefit her throughout her life.
Neighbors, inspired by the variety of vegetables grown in Tania’s homestead yard and her income from vegetable sales, sought her advice on growing vegetables in their own backyards. Tania’s successful vegetable farming serves as an inspiration to her neighbors, and her inspiration is the IDF. She expressed her gratitude to the IDF for her success
