The Journey of an Entrepreneur: How Mridu Transformed a Dream into a Brand
Mohsina Akhter Mridu, an inspiring entrepreneur, has beautifully blended tradition and creativity to turn her love for sarees into a thriving business. Starting with just Tk 2,500 during the COVID-19 pandemic, she launched her online saree brand, “Mridu,” driven by a passion for indigenous culture and a commitment to empower women.
Her story began in Karaitli village, Chandpur, but it was in the bustling city of Chittagong where her dreams took root. A graduate in Fine Arts from Chittagong University and currently pursuing postgraduate studies, Mridu found herself shouldering family responsibilities when her father suffered a stroke. Amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, she transformed adversity into opportunity.
Mridu’s artistic background gave her a unique perspective on design and color. This inspired her to launch an online platform during the pandemic, focusing on handcrafted indigenous sarees. She started with just three sarees and a Facebook page aptly named “Mridu.” Her goal was simple yet profound: to rekindle a love for sarees among modern women while preserving the essence of local traditions.
With the support of IDF’s “Development, Branding and E-Commerce Based Marketing of Microenterprise Product” project, Mridu’s collection has grown to include exquisite handloom varieties such as Silk, Half Silk, and Tangail Muslin. Expanding beyond sarees, her brand now offers kurtis and other handloom items. By collaborating with skilled artisans, she ensures each design reflects her creative vision while maintaining authenticity and superior quality.
Mridu’s business thrives on a model of collaboration and creativity. From her small outlet in Chittagong to her extensive online presence, every aspect of her enterprise is a testament to her commitment to excellence. Products are crafted in home-based production centers and delivered across the country with the utmost care. Her unique approach has earned her a loyal customer base and a growing social media following of over 38,000.
With monthly sales ranging from Tk 3–4 lakh and higher during festivals, Mridu has successfully turned her small initiative into a sustainable business. The role of support in Mridu’s journey cannot be overstated. IDF has been a crucial partner, providing her with financial assistance, training in branding and marketing, and resources to enhance her business operations. These interventions have allowed her to refine her craft and expand her reach, proving that dreams, when nurtured with guidance, can flourish.
Looking ahead, Mridu envisions a future where her brand transcends borders. She dreams of opening larger outlets in Dhaka and Chittagong and introducing her designs to the global stage. With a steadfast commitment to quality, she aims to redefine how women perceive and wear sarees, blending tradition with modernity.
Mridu’s story is more than just a tale of entrepreneurship; it’s a celebration of resilience and creativity. Her journey encourages us to embrace our heritage while boldly stepping into the future. As she continues to light the path for others, Mridu reminds us that with determination and support, the possibilities are endless.
